Faraday Fun

In December, six of our Year 8 Engineering students joined Miss Kenny at Fallibroome Academy in Macclesfield to compete against five other schools in the Faraday Challenge, a STEM based competition.

Each year the tasks for the Challenge are kept secret from everyone until the actual day. This year the teams were required to design a new ride for theme park, Thorpe Park. They had to design and build a prototype using motors, electronics and pneumatics, manage the money and show engineering skills. In addition to all that, they had to present what they had designed to the rest of the schools and judge each other’s work.

The Faraday Challenge is all about letting students be creative and use their own problem solving skills to explore their capabilities as engineers. The day gives students the opportunity to research, design and make solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems.

All of the students worked together really well and Grace Kennedy, in particular, was noted for her leadership skills. Although we did not win the Challenge, each of the team had a fabulous time, having learned a great deal and able to take away new skills for the future.
